PLUSES: I have only used this product for 5 minutes and I must say its strengths are in the FTP and WebDAV file transfer capabilities. As a photographer, I plan on using this application for quickly loading JPG pictures taken with my Nikon D3 and the WT-4 transmitter. This setup will probably require an access point to sit in the middle so DHCP IPs can be handed out. I dont know if I can configure both the WT-4 and MobileStudio for AdHOC networks using ICANA self assigned IPs. I will write a folowup review later to let you know after further testing.
MINUSES: The supported document types need work. It will view a JPG (but not progressive compressed ones), but you cant edit one. The view of high resolution JPGs is not ideal, as it seems to be down scaled. You have limited pinch zooming, and even then it becomes pixelated. I think it only supports PNG graphic files for edditing, and then that is limited to drawing lines of various thicknesses and colors. It is a far cry from the original Windows Paint application; although a good start. The text editor, allows you to add (ASCI) text to an existing document, or create a new one and add text (limited Notepad, not WordPad). Similarly, the WAV editor allows you to append an existing WAV file or create a new one, using the built in microphone on the iPad as the input source. The PDF, iWork Document, and iWork Spreadsheet are only viewers, no edditing capabilities. Thus you are limited to the four creation types, folders, text files, PNG image files, and WAV files. - The next minus isnt a limitation of the application, but a limitation of iPad/iPhone/iPod apps in general. Once you get the files onto your device into MobileStudio, you cant use other applications to manipulate those files. It seems the application space for documents is contained to each applications own use. I will see if there is another way around this without JBing the iPad.
SUMMARY: For $2, you cant go wrong if you need this app to move files in and out of your iPad/iPhone/iPod device. The FTP allows easy input/output of files (I used WinSCP) and WebDAV allows easy sharing of your documents. For you security freaks out there, be sure to encrypt your important documents prior to placing them into your MobileStudio as both the WebDAV and FTP is wide open with no passwords required for access. Once you encrypt though, dont expect MobileStudio to be able to decrypt them. Also, any unsupported file formats wont be able to be opened, but at least you can use this product to still use your iPad like a thumb drive (on steroids) for file movements. The product also looks like it supports "send to email" for all file types; I havent tested this feature, but I will let you know.
Similar Product: Mobile Viewer (also in App Store), but this product dont support FTP connections; ftp support is an absolute must for photographers planning on using wireless transmitters like the Nikon WT-4 to upload pictures to their iPad.
